Tendon Repair Surgery
Surgery for torn tendons
A procedure to help you get back to full fitness after an injury
Having tendon repair surgery
Your consultant may suggest surgery if other types of treatment, such as physiotherapy, haven't worked or if you've torn your tendon badly.
Surgery can be carried out on any tendon but it's usually done on shoulders (distal bicep repair), hands, wrists and the foot and ankle (Achilles tendon repair).

What happens during tendon repair surgery? icon plus
What happens during your procedure depends on the nature of your tendon injury. Your procedure could be carried out under general anaesthetic, or you might have a local anaesthetic just to numb the area. Your surgeon will discuss this with you beforehand.
Your surgeon will cut into your skin and stitch the ends of the torn tendon together before closing the area with stitches. Wherever possible, your surgeon will use a minimally invasive keyhole technique. If your injury is serious, they may take a piece of tendon from another part of your body and graft it on to the injured one. -
How to prepare for tendon repair surgery icon plus
Your consultant will let you know how to prepare for your procedure. If you're having general anaesthetic, they'll tell you how long you should avoid eating and drinking beforehand. -
Recovering from tendon repair surgery icon plus
It's important to rest your tendon after your procedure. You may have to wear a sling or bandage for a while. To help you build up your strength, your consultant might recommend a course of physiotherapy to help you build up your strength again. They'll also let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including work.
